"Independent minyanim" in 1985
A late-breaking update has been added to this old post on the history of the term "independent minyan". Scroll down to the bottom.
See my comments added at the bottom of that March 2010 post re: independent minyan. The term "havurah" and sometimes "independent havurah" was certainly in use prior to 1985 (the National Havurah Committee was founded before then, and several groups were termed a "minyan", as in the "Westwood Free Minyan" - see more in my comments).
